CPOE Cultural Impact to Unit Secretary Staff

Cultural Impact to Unit Secretary

It is common practice that Unit Secretaries enter the bulk of the physician written orders into the hospital’s Order Entry application, a re-definition of the role must take place.

The same considerations given to the nursing staff should be given to the Unit Secretaries. Their roles must change to continue to be as aware of the patient data as the physicians and nurses.

Unit Secretaries can have some system flows shifted over to them from the nurses and other administrative sources such as Admissions.

They will still need to be very aware of Transport and clinical ancillary orders, will still need to staff the unit phones, relay how a patient is to be moved, if a test may be an add-on, and may even need to place an occasional emergent verbal order via Order Entry, as appropriate and defined by written policy.
